Ask an Au Pair: Sophie finds the French to be quite friendly

This week, we asked Sophie, an 18-year old from Virginia. She is living in a 7th floor studio (no elevator!) in her host family’s apartment building in Neuilly, just outside of Paris. Here are excerpts from her responses:

What inspires you about Paris?
Everything is so picturesque. Paris and Parisians are elegant and effortless at the same time.

What do you dislike most about living in Paris?
How stores and restaurants close very early, but that’s just because the French love taking time off, which I am all for! Except when it’s late and I’m hungry!

What is the best way to meet Parisians?
Don’t be shy; contrary to some beliefs, the French are very friendly!

How do you improve or master your French language skills?
Insist that your host parents speak in French to you, even when it’s easier in English!

What is the best meal you’ve had in Paris?
A homemade spinach quiche with cheese, bread and wine.
Or a patisserie and café at 5am after La Nuit Blanche.

What is your favorite neighborhood?
Odéon or Bastille. During the day time Jardin de Tuileries.

What is your favorite café?
The one on the roof of Au Printemps. Café is good and the view is better.

What is your favorite shop?
My favorite place to shop is Rue de Commerce!

What is your favorite museum?
Musée d’Orsay by far!

What advice would you give to incoming au pairs?
Take advantage of everyday, there is so much to see and experience in France and in Europe! The time passes by quickly!
