Ask an Au Pair: Megan is learning so much about the world through life in Paris

This week, we asked Megan, a 23-year old from Missouri. She is living in a studio provided by her host family in the 8th arrondissement. Here are excerpts from her responses

What inspires you about Paris?
The amazing people I’ve met while living in this beautiful City of Lights.

What do you dislike most about living in Paris?
The mentality of Parisians… I can’t tell you how many times a day I get cut off on the sidewalk because someone just isn’t paying attention or just doesn’t care.

What is the best way to meet Parisians?
Bars. The atmosphere is laid-back and relaxed enough to really get to know people during a night out.

How do you improve or master your French language skills?
Use it everywhere. Even if you don’t think your French is good, just try. Use it with your family, at the movies, in restaurants, in bars and wherever else you go.

What is the best meal you’ve had in Paris?
Anything that starts with wine and ends with crème brûlée.

What is your favorite neighborhood?
Montmartre! It’s staggeringly beautiful and the feel of the area is laid back and fun.

What is your favorite café?
The Highlander, for sure!

What is your favorite shop?
Ah, Ladurée! Those macarons though..

What is your favorite museum?
Does Versailles count? I spent my birthday there and nothing will ever top being a real life princess at a castle for my birthday. So yeah, Versailles.

What is your favorite secret Paris spot?
Candelaria! My favorite food in the entire world is Mexican so this place was a great find. From the outside, it just looks like a total hole in the wall spot but it’s so much more than that. Not only does it have the best tacos ever but it also has a hidden bar in the back. You can only get to this bar if you know it’s there. It’s like the island that only Captain Jack Sparrow can get to because he’s been there before.

What advice would you give to incoming au pairs?
Make the effort to befriend people from different parts of the world. Most of my friends here are British or Kiwi. I love it. I’ve made some lasting relationships that will travel throughout the globe and I’m learning so much about the world outside of America.
