Ask an Au Pair: Jessica knows how to “get a life” in Paris

This week, we asked Jessica, a 23-year old from New York. She is living in a studio near her host family in the 15th arrondissement. Here are excerpts from her responses:

What inspires you about Paris?
It’s timelessness and the food, of course!

What do you dislike most about living in Paris?
Rush hour on the metro, high cost of living, many stores are closed on Sundays (even most grocery stores!)

What is the best way to meet Parisians?
Still trying to figure that out myself!

How do you improve or master your French language skills?
Speak it as often as possible!

What is the best meal you’ve had in Paris?
Anything with duck (confit, foie gras, magrets…)

What is your favorite neighborhood?
Le Marais, Odeon, Montparnasse

What is your favorite café?
The Frog & Princess, Le Pré des Clercs

(Editor’s note: We hear that the wait staff at The Frog and Princess are all English-speaking and the burgers and fries are great. American food when you crave it!)

What is your favorite shop?
Promod, a clothing store.

What is your favorite museum?
Musee D’Orsay

What is your favorite secret Paris spot?
Veggie Point in the lower level of the Galeries Lafayette food market (delicious homemade soups and smoothies!)

What advice would you give to incoming au pairs?
Be sure to dedicate time to a life outside of your host family and au pair schedule (even though they’ll be a huge part of your experience)!
